Are you considering cosmetic treatments but not sure what your options are? Maybe you've heard something about Botox and fillers, but aren't sure what the difference is and want to be clearer.

To learn about the difference between Botox and dermal fillers, we have compiled some relevant content for you to help you choose them better.

What is Botox?

Botox is actually the best-known brand name for a prescription drug called Botox. Botox and other brands are naturally purified forms of the botulinum toxin protein, obtained from bacteria. This treatment has been used safely in medical and aesthetic medicine for decades. While it sounds daunting, it's actually one of the safest beauty treatment products out there.

How does Botox Work?

Botulinum toxin works by blocking nerve signals in the muscle at the injection site. Botox interrupts nerve signals so the affected muscles relax. As a result, the specific muscles being treated do not move as much and some wrinkles may be softened, reduced, or even removed.

It can be understood as imagining the movement of the skin as folding a page. The longer you fold, the deeper the crease will be. By using Botox on your skin, you can prevent deeper wrinkles from forming or reduce existing ones.

What does Botox Treat?

Botox is very effective on wrinkles or fine lines caused by facial muscle movement, usually the upper face or mouth. Botox will reduce or prevent motion lines. If you already have rest lines Botox will also soften these lines, but if the lines are deep, several treatments may be needed.

Platysma Band

Botox can also be used to treat the platysma band, the muscles that start at the base of the neck and run up the sides of the neck to the jawline. As we get older, we lose fat tissue, which causes these muscles to protrude from our necks, making our necks look older.

Hyperhidrosis

Botulinum toxin is injected under the surface of the skin where it acts on acetylcholine receptors. Botox affects them in such a way that they no longer produce sweat. This treatment lasts for 7-10 months or even longer.

Molar

Using Botox molars can provide the same relief by relaxing muscles and reducing pain. It also shapes the jawline if it's squared off from grinding your teeth.

Migraines and Headaches

Botox can also be used to relieve migraines and tension headaches. It reduces the severity and frequency of migraines and sometimes eliminates them entirely.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers, sometimes called soft tissue fillers, are substances designed to be injected just below the surface of the skin to add volume and fullness. As we age, natural collagen and elastin in the skin decrease, and cells lose the ability to naturally produce more of these substances. This can lead to severe rest lines and volume loss. There are several different types and consistencies of fillers, each designed to address specific concerns about the face.

How do Dermal Fillers Work?

As mentioned above, Botox can take some time to work its way through the muscles to achieve the desired results, whereas dermal fillers can give immediate results. Dermal fillers contain a substance called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is actually a natural substance that exists in our bodies. The hyaluronic acid in fillers is man-made but so similar that your body recognizes the substance as your own.

What are Dermal Fillers Typically Used For?

Dermal fillers are usually used on the lower face, but can also be used on the entire face depending on what you want to achieve. For example, volumizing fillers are used on the chin or muzzle line, while syrupy fillers are used on areas with fine lines or thin skin, such as around the mouth or tear troughs.

Direct Method

The direct approach to dermal fillers is to directly address the line that you can see. This is the traditional filling method, ideal for clients looking for immediate results.

Indirect Method

The indirect approach of using dermal fillers is just as effective, if not more effective when performed by someone with extensive anatomical knowledge. As we age, the ligaments over the cheekbones become laxer, and the fat pads on the cheeks separate and sag. This can cause dimpling, sagging, and chinning in the skin. As we age, we also lose fatty tissue, which leads to sagging skin. The indirect method helps bring structure and support to your face by lifting tissue along the cheekbones or jaw. By adding structure, the facial midline is indirectly reduced.

In addition to these areas, dermal fillers can also be used to fill in lips that have become thinner or less full due to aging, or if the client wants to enhance the fullness and shape of the lips for aesthetic purposes. It is also used to restore the jaw to its original shape after tooth extraction or receding gums.

More recently, dermal fillers have also been used as skin boosters. Clinicians infuse the water-like filler in droplets under the skin's surface in a grid pattern. This improves the skin's texture, increasing hydration and plumpness. We can perform this treatment on the hands, cheeks, and around the eyes.

One of the most underrated uses of dermal fillers is reducing scarring from injuries.

What is the Best Age to Start Dermal Fillers?

There's no real age for this one, but when the face develops fairly deep and well-defined rest lines, the answer may be dermal filler treatment.

What to Expect After Dermal Filler Treatment?

Fillers immediately plump up the skin and blend into and soften your skin over the next month.

Other Considerations

To summarize, the main difference between Botox and dermal fillers is that Botox relaxes the muscles to stop lines and wrinkles from active facial muscles. Typically, we find these muscles on the upper face, such as the forehead and around the eyes. Dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid to fill or plump areas that have lost volume or smoothness. This can include wrinkles around the mouth, lips, and cheeks. Botox is a prescription-only medical treatment, and dermal fillers are purely cosmetic.

Botox and dermal fillers are minimally invasive solutions and are safe when administered by an experienced clinician. Side effects are mostly mild and occur rarely in most clients. Although they are minimally invasive, both can carry some risks that you need to be aware of.
